Set up a workspace, connect the app, and understand every number TaskDash shows you.

Getting started

TaskDash is the web panel and server. TrueDuty is the desktop app that tracks time. You can use TrueDuty alone, without any server, or connect it to your team.

  1. Create a workspace at /signup, or join with the team code your admin sent you.
  2. Download TrueDuty for your system from the download page.
  3. Open the app. It tracks locally right away. To join your team, open Settings in the app and choose Connect.
  4. Pick a project and press Start. That is all.

Connecting the app

In the app open Settings, then Connect to a team, and type your server address. Then choose one of these:

  • Six digit code: in the panel open Settings, App and devices, Get connection code. Type the code in the app. No e-mail needed.
  • Team code (XXXX-XXXX): for people without an account. The app asks for your name, e-mail and a password and creates the account.
  • E-mail and password.
  • Google: the app opens your browser, you approve the computer, and the app finishes by itself.

On the first connection the app shows the server key fingerprint. It must match the one in Settings in the panel.

Tracking, idle time and breaks

While a timer runs, the app counts keyboard and mouse events per minute (never which keys) and notes the active app and window title.

  • Keep paused: the timer stops when you go idle and stays stopped.
  • Start from the stop point: the timer stops when idle starts and restarts on your next input.
  • Start from the max point (default): idle time up to the team limit still counts, the rest becomes a gap you can add back or dismiss.

Breaks stop the timer and show you as on break. Your team may set a daily break allowance; you are never blocked, admins are just told when it is passed. Overtime is never blocked either.

Privacy and screenshots

Screenshots are off by default. If your team turns them on, nothing is captured until you agree in Privacy in your panel. You can pause for an hour at any time from the panel or the app settings.

Opening a screenshot needs your password again and unlocks for ten minutes. Every view, your own included, is written to the view log, and the owner gets a notice.

With screenshots off your team still sees hours, activity level, apps and categories.

Reports and categories

Each minute is put in a category: Development, Design, Communication, Meetings, Project management, Documents, File sharing, Browsing, Entertainment or Other. Browser tabs shape the category but are never listed one by one.

Admins with "Rate apps" can mark any app as work or not work, change its category, or add a rule for a word in the window title. New software shows up at the top of Apps until someone rates it.

Pay, payouts and bills

Set an hourly rate or monthly salary per person in People. Payroll shows earnings for any period. Create payouts for everyone at once or per person, mark them paid, and download PDF bills one by one or as a single file.

Everyone sees their own balance on the dashboard: earned this month, paid, and still due.

Bonuses are added from the Bonus button next to each person. Leave, holidays and bonuses show as their own lines on the bill. Upload your company logo under Bill details and it is printed at the top of every PDF.

Paid leave, sick leave and holidays

Every person gets 7 paid leave days a year by default. Only the owner can change the team default or give one person a different allowance.

People ask for paid or sick leave on the Leave page, and add missed time in Timesheets. Managers can add leave for others. Everything waits in Payroll until the owner, or a role with "Approve requests", approves it.

Sick days always use paid leave first. If the owner allows it, extra sick days after that are paid too, up to a set number. Anything beyond is approved as unpaid.

Paid holidays are added once for the whole team. Approved paid leave and holidays count as a normal working day: hourly pay adds the daily target hours, monthly salaries are simply not reduced.

Roles and permissions

Every team starts with Owner, Admin, Manager, Member and Developer. Owners and people who can manage roles can create more roles and tick exactly what each one may do. Nobody can hand out a permission they do not have, and the owner always keeps every permission.

Developer is for integrations: API keys and the API reference, nothing else.
